Most people come to Jordan to see Petra but one of Most people come to Jordan to see Petra but one of my favorite sites is Jerash (I was here 8 years ago). What makes it so interesting to me is that it is an entire town only recently unearthed, in the late 1940s, as people began constructing homes in the region. It dates back to the 2nd Century when Hadrian was in power. Most of the homes you see in the background are built on ruins that have yet to be excavated and now the government can not seize those private homes to continue excavating. So we'll never know what other treasures are here. It is believed that there were more than 100,000 columns in the town at one point. Here you'll see Hadrian's Arch, the promenade, 2 temples, a Roman theater, and dozens of buildings from the town's government and residential areas. Imagine, digging the foundation for your new home and stumbling upon these ruins from the Bronze Age!
