Choosing where to stay in Abu Dhabi can be confusing because the city’s major attractions are spread across several distinct areas. The Corniche, Saadiyat Island and Yas Island all offer very different experiences, and there is no single neighborhood that works best for everyone.
For most first-time visitors, I recommend staying near the Corniche. It gives you a central base for visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan, Emirates Palace, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the city’s waterfront. Saadiyat Island is better if you want a luxury beach resort, while Yas Island is the best choice for theme parks and family attractions. Check out my guide to 2 days in Abu Dhabi.
I stayed at the Radisson Blu Hotel & Resort, Abu Dhabi Corniche and found its location especially convenient for a first visit. I could enjoy the waterfront and resort amenities while still being within an easy taxi ride of the places I wanted to see.
If you’re still trying to decide between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, read my guide to both here.
Best Areas to Stay in Abu Dhabi at a Glance
Stay near the Corniche if this is your first trip and you want the best balance of sightseeing, restaurants, waterfront views and convenient access to the city.
Choose Saadiyat Island if beaches, luxury resorts, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and a slower pace are your priorities.
Choose Yas Island if you are traveling with children or plan to visit Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi or Yas Waterworld.
Stay near the airport only for a late arrival, early departure or brief Abu Dhabi stopover. The airport area is not the best base for sightseeing.

The Corniche: Best Overall Area for First-Time Visitors
The Corniche is my top recommendation for a first visit to Abu Dhabi. This part of the city gives you waterfront views, beaches, restaurants and relatively convenient access to many of Abu Dhabi’s cultural attractions.
You will still need taxis or a car for most sightseeing because Abu Dhabi is not a compact, walkable city. However, staying near the Corniche reduces the amount of time you spend crossing the city and gives you somewhere attractive to walk in the evening.
The Corniche is especially well suited to couples, first-time visitors and travelers who want to combine sightseeing with time at the pool or beach.
Radisson Blu Hotel & Resort, Abu Dhabi Corniche: Best Overall Choice
This is where I stayed, and I would choose it again for the location. The Radisson Blu sits across from the Corniche waterfront and gives guests access to resort-style facilities while remaining close to Emirates Palace, Qasr Al Watan and the western end of the Corniche.
It is a particularly good choice if you want a comfortable hotel with beach and pool time but do not want to pay the rates charged by Abu Dhabi’s most luxurious resorts. For a first visit, it offers one of the best combinations of location, amenities and value.

The St. Regis Abu Dhabi: Best for Corniche Luxury
The St. Regis Abu Dhabi combines a central Corniche location with the polished service and amenities of a luxury resort. The hotel has spacious rooms, water views, several restaurants and access to a private beach club.
I would recommend it for couples, special occasions and travelers who want an upscale hotel without isolating themselves from the city. Its location makes it easy to divide your time between sightseeing and relaxing by the water.

Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental: Best Iconic Splurge
Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental is one of Abu Dhabi’s most recognizable hotels. The property is extraordinarily grand, with an expansive private beach, elaborate public spaces, landscaped grounds and several destination restaurants.
This is the hotel to choose if the stay itself is meant to be one of the highlights of your trip. It works particularly well for milestone celebrations, honeymoons and travelers who want the full Abu Dhabi luxury experience.
Even if you do not stay here, it is worth visiting for a meal, afternoon tea or simply to see the property.

Saadiyat Island: Best for Beaches, Culture and Resort Luxury
Saadiyat Island is the best place to stay in Abu Dhabi if your ideal trip includes a beautiful beach, a luxury resort and time at the city’s major museums.
The island is home to the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the expanding Saadiyat Cultural District. Its pale sand and clear water give it the feeling of a true beach destination, yet it remains within driving distance of central Abu Dhabi.
The tradeoff is that you may spend more time in taxis when visiting the Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan or Yas Island. I would choose Saadiyat for a longer trip with time to enjoy the resort rather than for a rushed overnight stay.
The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort: Best Luxury Beach Resort
The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort is an excellent choice for travelers who want Abu Dhabi’s culture without giving up a luxury beach vacation. It occupies a beautiful stretch of Saadiyat Beach and is only a short drive from the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Saadiyat Cultural District.
The resort has multiple pools, a private beach, a spa and several restaurants, so it is easy to spend an entire day without leaving the property. This is my choice for couples, beach lovers and travelers who want a quieter, resort-centered visit.

Yas Island: Best for Families and Theme Parks
Yas Island is the best area for families planning to build their trip around Abu Dhabi’s major entertainment attractions. Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld, Yas Mall and Yas Marina are all concentrated here.
The island also has a complimentary shuttle connecting many hotels and attractions, which can make a family trip considerably easier.
I would not choose Yas Island for a primarily cultural visit. It is farther from the Corniche, Qasr Al Watan and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque than many first-time visitors realize. However, it is extremely convenient if the theme parks are the main reason for your trip.
Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island: Best for Families
Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island is a strong choice for families because of its waterfront location and proximity to Yas Island’s major attractions. The hotel has a large pool, several restaurants and a lively resort atmosphere.
Depending on the rate and package selected, stays may include access to a Yas Island theme park. Check the details carefully before booking because the value can be significant for a family planning to visit the parks.

Downtown Abu Dhabi: Best Value for Sightseeing
Downtown Abu Dhabi is practical rather than resort-like. You will not have the same beach atmosphere found along the Corniche or on Saadiyat Island, but you can often find more affordable rooms, local restaurants and easy taxi access to the city’s attractions.
This area is best for travelers who expect to spend most of the day sightseeing and primarily need a comfortable, conveniently located hotel.
Southern Sun Abu Dhabi: Best Value
Southern Sun Abu Dhabi offers spacious rooms, a rooftop pool and a central location at rates that are often lower than those of the beachfront resorts.
It is a sensible choice if you want to put more of your budget toward tours, restaurants and attractions. I would choose it for a short city stay when location and comfort matter more than direct beach access.

Near Zayed International Airport: Best for a Stopover
The area around Zayed International Airport works for an overnight layover, an early flight or a very short stop in Abu Dhabi. It is also relatively convenient for Yas Island.
I would not stay near the airport for a longer first visit. You will be far from the Corniche, Saadiyat Island and many of Abu Dhabi’s signature cultural sights.
Premier Inn Abu Dhabi Airport: Best for an Overnight Layover
Premier Inn Abu Dhabi Airport is a straightforward, budget-conscious choice when convenience matters more than atmosphere. It works well if you arrive late, leave early or need a comfortable place to sleep between flights.
Before booking, check the hotel’s current transportation arrangements and exact location in relation to your terminal.

Is It Better to Stay on the Corniche or Saadiyat Island?
For a first visit focused on sightseeing, I would stay near the Corniche. It provides a more central base and makes it easier to see several sides of Abu Dhabi during a short trip.
Choose Saadiyat Island if the beach and resort experience are just as important as sightseeing. It is particularly appealing for couples and travelers spending at least three or four nights in Abu Dhabi.
Is It Better to Stay in Abu Dhabi or Dubai?
Abu Dhabi and Dubai are close enough to combine in one trip, but they offer very different experiences. Abu Dhabi feels calmer, more spacious and more culturally focused. Dubai has more nightlife, shopping, entertainment and high-profile attractions.
I personally preferred Abu Dhabi, particularly for its combination of culture, beaches, food and relaxed luxury. My complete Abu Dhabi vs Dubai comparison can help you decide whether to stay in one city or divide your trip between both.
If you choose to add a couple of days in Dubai, check out my guide to 2 days in Dubai.
How Many Days Should You Stay in Abu Dhabi?
Two full days will allow you to see several of Abu Dhabi’s major attractions, but three days provides a much better balance. Check out my guide to 2 days in Abu Dhabi.
With three days, you can visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan and the Louvre Abu Dhabi without giving up an entire day at the beach or resort. Add another day if you want to visit Yas Island’s theme parks or take a desert excursion.
Do You Need a Car in Abu Dhabi?
You do not need to rent a car for a short visit. Taxis are widely available and are usually the simplest way to travel between attractions. Uber and Careem also operate in the city.
A rental car may make sense for a longer trip or if you plan to travel beyond central Abu Dhabi. For a two- or three-day visit focused on the city’s major sights, I would use taxis.
My Final Thoughts
For most first-time visitors, I recommend staying near the Corniche. It gives you the most balanced Abu Dhabi experience, with easy access to the waterfront, cultural sights and some of the city’s best-known hotels.
