Everything you need to know about the Prolon Fasting Diet

by Beth Graham

Following a bout with the dreaded Covid, I was feeling really sluggish so I went to visit my functional health medicine doctor at the Mayo Clinic. My chief complaint was feeling tired all the time, but also some recent stubborn weight gain (could be menopause, could be all those pandemic hot dogs). His prescription? The Prolon Fasting Mimicking Diet (Prolo FMD). He said that he and his wife do it four times a year just to boost their metabolism and to support cellular turnover due to aging (more on this later in the post). I was no stranger to Prolon. I had done it two or three times previously, affectionately calling it the ‘Prolon soup diet’ as a way to shed a few pounds quickly. And yes, if you do your research you’ll learn why Prolon day 3 is a struggle!

What is the Prolon Fasting Mimicking Diet?

Prolon is a 5-day meal program that simulates the benefits of fasting while still providing essential nutrients. In recent years, fasting has gained recognition as a powerful tool for health and wellness. Among various fasting methods, Prolon has emerged as a standout program that not only simplifies the fasting process but also enhances its benefits. Developed by Dr. Valter Longo and his team at the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California, Prolon FMD is grounded in research on fasting and cellular regeneration. The program aims to promote autophagy, a natural process where the body cleans out damaged cells and regenerates new ones, contributing to improved health and longevity.

The Science Behind Fasting
Fasting triggers a series of metabolic changes in the body. During a fast, insulin levels drop, prompting the body to start using fat as its primary energy source. This shift can lead to weight loss and improved metabolic health. Additionally, fasting can reduce inflammation, support heart health, and enhance brain function.

Prolon takes advantage of these benefits while allowing participants to consume specific plant-based meals, thus minimizing the discomfort often associated with traditional fasting. The program is low in calories (around 800-1100 per day) and strategically designed to ensure participants receive the nutrients they need without interrupting the fasting state.

The Prolon Fasting Diet

The Prolon diet features delicious soup-based meals. Soups are an essential component of the program. Soups are primarily liquid, which helps keep participants hydrated—a critical aspect of any fasting protocol. The liquid content also aids in creating a feeling of fullness, reducing cravings and making it easier to stick to the meal plan. Prolon soups include nutrient-dense ingredients, including vegetables, legumes, and healthy fats. Each soup provides essential vitamins and minerals while remaining low in calories. The blend of ingredients helps to maintain energy levels and support overall health during the fasting period, but again, Prolon day 3 is tough! Eating a variety of soups helps to keep meals interesting and satisfying. Prolon offers several flavors, from savory vegetable blends to hearty lentil soups, ensuring that participants enjoy a diverse menu throughout the five days.

How the Prolon Diet Works

I’m not going to lie – it’s tough to make it through five days of the diet, but it is SO worth it when you finish. You won’t believe how much energy you have. Even after Prolon Day 3, which most people say is the toughest, you get this boost of energy and creativity. You can stay motivated to complete the entire five day program with a little planning and inspiration like I shared in this previous post.

Prolon FMD is more than just a fasting program; it’s a carefully designed journey toward better health, longevity, and rejuvenation. By combining the science of fasting with delicious, nutrient-rich soups, Prolon provides a sustainable way to achieve fasting benefits without the discomfort often associated with traditional methods. If you’re looking to explore the benefits of fasting while still enjoying flavorful meals, Prolon could be the perfect solution for you.

The Benefits of the Prolon Fasting Mimicking Diet

Prolon Promotes Cellular Regeneration

One of the primary benefits of Prolon is its ability to stimulate autophagy, the body’s natural process of cleaning out damaged cells. This regenerative process helps promote overall cellular health and may improve longevity. By following Prolon’s structured meal plan, participants can enhance their body’s ability to detoxify and rejuvenate.

Fasting May Help With Weight Management

Prolon can facilitate weight loss in a healthy and sustainable manner. By providing a low-calorie intake over five days, the program encourages the body to shift from glucose to fat as its primary energy source. Many participants report significant weight loss and improved body composition, making it a viable option for managing weight.

Prolon FMD Improves Metabolic Health

Fasting can lead to a host of metabolic benefits, including improved insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels. Prolon diet supports these outcomes by providing meals that are low in sugars and high in healthy fats and proteins. As a result, participants often experience enhanced energy levels and better overall metabolic function.

The Fasting Diet Helps Reduce Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is linked to numerous health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. Prolon’s fasting-mimicking approach may reduce markers of inflammation in the body. By allowing the body to focus on healing during the fasting period, participants may experience a decrease in inflammatory responses.

Fasting Enhances Mental Clarity

Many individuals report improved focus and mental clarity during and after Prolon. Fasting can lead to increased production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports brain health. As a result, participants may find they can think more clearly and have improved cognitive function while following the program.

Prolon Fasting is Simple and Convenient

One of the most appealing aspects of the Prolon diet is its ease of use. The program provides all the meals you need for five days, eliminating the hassle of meal planning and preparation. By Prolon day 3, you’ll appreciate the simplicity. Each component will ensure you receive the right balance of nutrients without having to spend hours in the kitchen.

Prolon Fasting Mimicking Diet Offers Support for Longevity

Research suggests that fasting may promote longevity by reducing the risk of age-related diseases. Prolon’s fasting-mimicking diet is based on scientific studies that link caloric restriction and fasting to increased lifespan in various organisms. By adopting the Prolon diet, participants may take a proactive step toward healthier aging.
