I recently took my family to La Fortuna, Costa Rica, in search of a little family time and some adventure. My adult children live far away so I wanted to get away as a family and this proved to be the perfect vacation destination with something for everyone. Tucked away in the lush jungles of the Alajuela province, this small but vibrant town sits in the shadow of Arenal Volcano, offering breathtaking landscapes and an abundance of thrilling outdoor experiences. We spent four days exploring the area and I could have stayed an entire week because there’s so much to do. Whether you’re hiking around the volcano, indulging in a coffee and chocolate tour, riding horseback through the rainforest, or plunging down white-water rapids, La Fortuna has something for everyone.
One of the most captivating aspects of La Fortuna is its lush foliage. We stayed at the Arenal History Inn (more on that below) and I was amazed by the vibrant tropical plants and towering trees throughout the property. The inn is surrounded by exotic flowers, ferns, and dense greenery that attract colorful butterflies and hummingbirds. Nearby, the rainforest flourishes with towering ceiba trees, strangler figs, and lush palms, providing a stunning backdrop for any nature lover. The vibrant greenery, paired with the misty ambiance from Arenal’s ever-present clouds, makes this area feel truly magical.

Arenal Volcano: The Heart of La Fortuna
No trip to La Fortuna is complete without witnessing the grandeur of Arenal Volcano. This perfectly conical volcano, standing at 1,657 meters (5,437 feet), is an iconic landmark. While the volcano is currently dormant, it once had frequent eruptions, with the last major activity in 2010.
Hiking in La Fortuna
The area is known for its hiking trails around Arenal Volcano, which offer an incredible way to explore Costa Rica’s diverse landscapes, from dense rainforests to ancient lava fields. Trails within Arenal Volcano National Park, such as the Lava Flow 1968 and Los Tucanes Trail, take hikers through dramatic volcanic terrain, offering stunning views of the towering volcano and Lake Arenal. The Arenal Observatory Lodge also features a network of well-maintained trails, where visitors can cross hanging bridges, visit waterfalls, and spot wildlife like howler monkeys, toucans, and coatis. For a more immersive rainforest experience, the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park provides a unique perspective with suspension bridges high above the jungle canopy. Coffee and Chocolate Tour
If you love coffee and chocolate (who doesn’t?), the Don Juan Coffee and Chocolate Tour is a must. This may sound like a mundane tour but it was one of our favorite experiences. The walking tour weaves through the chocolate and coffee plantation and the guide explains everything in great detail. My daughter was fascinated by all the birds so our guide was great at pointing out the different birds living among the trees. You’ll learn so much about the details of how coffee and chocolate are made – I forget that both are actually considered fruits! One of the highlights is participating in the hands-on chocolate-making process, where you grind cacao beans and mix ingredients to create your own treat. The tour is both educational and delicious, making it an excellent stop for coffee and chocolate lovers alike.
Horseback Riding at Don Tobias
This adventure was probably the standout experience of our entire trip. We started at the Don Tobias Ranch and donned our riding boots and climbed aboard our horses for an incredible ride through La Fortuna’s countryside. The guided tour took us through rolling hills and lush rainforest, culminating with a stop at the base of the Arenal Volcano where the views were stunning. Our ride ended at a hidden waterfall where we could take a refreshing dip.
Sloth Watching Tour
This was the number one request of my kids. The Sloth Watching Tour through Sloth’s Territory in La Fortuna offers a unique opportunity to observe these adorable, slow-moving creatures in their natural habitat. This guided tour takes visitors through a privately owned reserve, where a well-maintained trail winds through lush rainforest, home to both two-toed and three-toed sloths. Expert guides help spot these camouflaged animals high in the trees while also pointing out other incredible wildlife, such as colorful toucans, frogs, and butterflies. With a focus on conservation and education, the tour provides fascinating insights into sloth behavior, diet, and habitat. Perfect for nature lovers and photographers, this experience ensures an up-close and ethical encounter with one of Costa Rica’s most beloved animals. We saw a total of eight sloths!
White-Water Rafting: An Adrenaline Rush
For thrill-seekers, white-water rafting on the Sarapiquí or Balsa River is an absolute must. The Balsa River offers Class II and III rapids, perfect for beginners looking for an exciting but manageable ride. If you crave a more intense challenge, the Sarapiquí River delivers Class III and IV rapids, guaranteeing an adrenaline rush. Rafting through the jungle was exhilarating—plunging through rapids, dodging rocks, and getting completely soaked was all part of the fun. The guides were incredibly skilled, ensuring both safety and excitement. Plus, the riverbanks were teeming with wildlife; we spotted toucans, sloths, and howler monkeys along the way.

You know I’m a spa girl so visiting a thermal spa was definitely on my list! After a long day of adventure, there’s nothing better than soaking in La Fortuna’s famous hot springs. These geothermal pools are naturally heated by the volcanic activity of Arenal. We spent an evening at EcoTermales Hot Springs, recommended by the concierge at our hotel as a more intimate and less crowded resort. EcoTermales offers a quiet and relaxing atmosphere with beautifully designed pools surrounded by lush rainforest. We enjoyed a buffet dinner and then spent the entire evening relaxing in the nine thermal pools, with cocktails of course. Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa is the most popular natural hot spring pools in La Fortuna but it was booked the evening we planned to go.

Piura is the on-site restaurant at Arenal History Inn and we enjoyed several meals here. It serves up a delicious selection of Costa Rican and international dishes in a relaxed, open-air setting. Breakfast is a highlight, featuring fresh tropical fruits, gallo pinto, and locally brewed coffee. The dinner menu includes flavorful grilled meats, seafood, and homemade desserts, making it a great spot for a quiet and satisfying meal after a day of exploring La Fortuna.

Getting to La Fortuna
Costa Rica has two major international airports: Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José and Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia.
- From San José (SJO): The drive to La Fortuna takes about 3 to 3.5 hours, covering 120 kilometers (75 miles). The route is mostly paved but includes winding mountain roads, so driving requires caution. Renting a 4WD vehicle is recommended, especially during the rainy season.
- From Liberia (LIR): The drive is slightly shorter, around 2.5 to 3 hours (140 kilometers or 87 miles). This route is generally smoother but still has some curvy sections.
Car rentals are available at both airports, with major agencies like Adobe, Alamo, and Enterprise offering reliable options. A 4WD vehicle is ideal for exploring La Fortuna, as some areas have unpaved roads. If you prefer not to drive, shared shuttles and private transfers are also available.
Best Time to Visit La Fortuna
The best time to visit La Fortuna depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.
- Dry Season (December to April): This is the most popular time to visit, with sunny days and lower humidity. It’s the best time for hiking, outdoor adventures, and clear views of Arenal Volcano.
- Rainy Season (May to November): While it rains more frequently, the rainforest is lush and vibrant. If you don’t mind occasional showers, this is a great time to visit for fewer crowds and lower prices. The waterfalls and rivers are also at their most impressive during this time.
La Fortuna is a destination that has it all—adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty. Whether you’re hiking around Arenal Volcano, indulging in chocolate and coffee, riding horseback through the jungle, or plunging down wild rapids, there’s never a dull moment.
