The Best Puerto Vallarta Restaurant And Food Tours For Authentic Mexican Food

by Beth Graham

There’s a reason people love to travel to Mexico. For me, I’m torn between the beautiful beaches and the authentic Mexican food. Puerto Vallarta is one of my favorite spots in Mexico. It is home to my favorite Puerto Vallarta restaurant, some really fun food tours, and tons of really unique activities.

Authentic Mexican Cooking Class

We visited one of Puerto Vallarta’s best restaurants, Gaby’s, for an authentic Mexican cooking class. For a hands-on culinary adventure in Puerto Vallarta, Gaby’s Restaurant offers exceptional cooking classes. Located in the city’s charming downtown, these classes invite you to learn traditional techniques and recipes passed down through generations. From crafting handmade tortillas to preparing authentic mole and salsas, you’ll discover the secrets that make Mexican food so flavorful and vibrant. The Most Scenic Puerto Vallarta Restaurant

One of my favorite restaurants in Puerto Vallarta – for the food and the view – is La Palapa, perched along the pristine sands of Playa Los Muertos. It is a dining destination that seamlessly blends elegance with the laid-back charm of Puerto Vallarta. Established in 1959, La Palapa is one of the city’s most iconic beachfront restaurants. It offers breathtaking ocean views alongside an innovative menu of Mexican-Pacific cuisine.

La Palapa’s culinary offerings range from fresh seafood dishes like coconut shrimp and tuna tartare to creative takes on local favorites, all infused with tropical flavors and artful presentation. The restaurant’s commitment to fresh, local ingredients ensures every bite is memorable. Whether you’re enjoying a romantic sunset dinner under the soft glow of tiki torches or a leisurely breakfast with your toes in the sand, La Palapa creates an atmosphere that feels both luxurious and welcoming.

Beyond its stellar food and ambiance, La Palapa is also known for its impeccable service and expertly crafted cocktails. Whether you’re a visitor or local, dining at La Palapa is an essential Puerto Vallarta experience.

Where To Stay In Puerto Vallarta

There are fabulous hotels in Puerto Vallarta. The best choice for you depends on whether you want to be at the beach or closer to downtown. I love staying at Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel, an all-inclusive adults-only resort. Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel & Romantic Getaway is a luxurious, adults-only retreat located on the golden shores of Puerto Vallarta. It is just a short stroll from the vibrant downtown area, and it has a great Puerto Vallarta restaurant.

Known for its sophisticated ambiance and personalized service, this boutique property offers an intimate escape where every detail is designed for relaxation and romance. The elegant suites feature private balconies with breathtaking ocean views, plush amenities, and thoughtful touches like welcome massages upon arrival. Guests can indulge in gourmet dining at the hotel’s award-winning restaurants. You can also unwind at the serene Mind & Soul Spa, or enjoy cocktails by the infinity pool overlooking the Pacific. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply seeking a tranquil getaway, Villa Premiere is the perfect blend of coastal charm and refined luxury.

Other popular hotels include beachfront resorts, boutique hotels, and luxury villas. Be sure to choose a place that suits your style and budget. With Puerto Vallarta safety being a top requirement of travelers, many resorts have private security.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Puerto Vallarta

As they say with Paris, it’s always a good time to visit Puerto Vallarta. The best time to visit Puerto Vallarta depends on what you’re looking for, but generally, the months between November and April are ideal. This is the city’s dry season, offering sunny skies, warm temperatures, and little to no rain—perfect for beach days, outdoor adventures, and evening strolls along the Malecón. These months also coincide with whale-watching season, a highlight for nature enthusiasts. If you prefer fewer crowds and great deals, consider visiting in May or October, when the weather is warm but not as humid as the peak summer months. While the rainy season (June to September) brings tropical showers, it’s also when Puerto Vallarta’s lush surroundings are at their greenest, offering a quieter, more tranquil vibe. No matter when you visit, Puerto Vallarta’s charm and beauty ensure a memorable getaway year-round.
