It’s no secret that I seek out really cool food and wine experiences everywhere I travel. And Italy never disappoints! After a recent Windstar cruise exploring the Mediterranean Islands of Spain, France, and Italy, we decided to spend a few days on Capri. I was searching for the top restaurants on Capri and looking for a really unique culinary experience when I came across the Wine Tasting and Olive Oil Tasting at Giardino di Capri. It was spectacular so I wanted to share the experience with you here.
How I found this cooking class
I did a broad Google search for interesting food and wine experiences and this one popped up on Viator, as one of many offerings. This one intrigued me the most because I like having authentic local experiences with local residents. I then did some Google searches and found that Giardino di Capri has excellent reviews so I booked it!
Our Wine Tasting and Olive Oil Tasting at Giardino di Capri
We had booked a private event for the four of us (my husband and our friends accompanied me) that would last 2 hours for $150 per person (but SO worth it). Here’s the website description for the event:
Our cheese, wine and extra virgin olive oil experience includes cheese & condiments tasting along with:
- Michel’angelo extra virgin olive oil tasting (7 varieties) where guests will gain an insight into tasting techniques, olive oil properties, olive harvesting, and production of extra virgin olive oil.
- Digital wine, cheese and extra virgin olive oil tasting notes.
- Digital photos upon request.
- Private transfer to and from our garden villa in Anacapri.
Nestled on the stunning island of Capri, Giardino di Capri offers an unforgettable experience that blends the rich flavors of Italian tradition with the natural beauty of the Mediterranean. A visit to this beautiful garden is not just a stroll through lush landscapes and blooming flowers, but an immersion into the heart of Italy’s wine and olive oil heritage. But best of all, it was the hospitality of Gianluca, local Caprese chef, and his wife Holly who made our experience so memorable. Here’s everything you need to know about the wine tasting and olive oil tasting at Giardino di Capri, and why this experience should be at the top of your travel itinerary when visiting the island.
Giardino di Capri: A Hidden Gem
We were picked up at our hotel, Relais Mareasca, near the port and driven to Giardino di Capri, a peaceful, beautifully landscaped garden in Anacapri, the quieter side of the island. The garden is an oasis of serenity, offering sweeping views of the sea and the island’s lush terrain. It’s the perfect setting for indulging in two of the region’s finest offerings: wine and olive oil.
The garden is home to Mediterranean plants, aromatic herbs, and century-old olive trees. The experience here isn’t just about tasting the products; it’s about connecting with the land that produces them. The local winery and olive oil producers use methods that have been passed down through generations, creating authentic and high-quality products that are as rich in history as they are in flavor.
The Cooking Class And Wine Tasting at Giardino di Capri
We arrived and got a short tour of the gardens while we sipped on a welcome glass of wine. Next, we were seated at the bar where we could watch the Chef and his team prepare our tastings. Chef Gianluca prepared a number of light bites for us to enjoy with the wines, including an old family recipe for Torta Caprese al Limone (Capri is famous for its massive, juicy lemons!)
Capri is home to a number of excellent local vineyards, and Giardino di Capri collaborates with some of the best wineries to offer guests a delightful wine tasting experience. During your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to sample a selection of Capri’s finest wines, each with its own story to tell.
Some highlights of the wine tasting include:
- Capri Rosso: A full-bodied red wine made from local grapes such as Piedirosso, offering fruity notes and a smooth finish.
- Capri Bianco: A refreshing white wine that’s perfect for a warm afternoon, with crisp citrus flavors and a slight mineral undertone.
- Capri Rosato: A lovely rosé that pairs beautifully with the island’s seafood dishes, with a delicate balance of floral and fruity notes.
The knowledgeable staff at Giardino di Capri will guide you through the tasting, explaining the unique characteristics of each wine and offering insight into the island’s winemaking traditions. As you sip and savor, you’ll enjoy the picturesque views of the garden and the sea beyond. Chef Gianluca prepared a number of dishes to accompany our tastings.
Olive Oil Tasting at Giardino di Capri
In addition to its wines, Capri is renowned for its high-quality olive oils. The island’s Mediterranean climate is ideal for growing olives, and local producers use traditional methods to press olives into oil. Giardino di Capri offers an immersive olive oil tasting experience, where you can sample a selection of exquisite extra virgin olive oils.
What makes this tasting unique is the opportunity to compare different types of olive oil, each with its own distinct flavor profile. You’ll be able to taste:
- Delicate Oils: Smooth, light olive oils that have a mild, fruity flavor, ideal for drizzling over salads or pasta dishes.
- Robust Oils: Rich, bold olive oils with a peppery finish, perfect for dipping bread or enhancing grilled meats.
- Flavored Oils: Oils infused with herbs or citrus, offering a more aromatic experience that pairs wonderfully with Mediterranean dishes.
During the tasting, Holly explained the process of making olive oil—from hand-picking the olives to the cold-pressing method that preserves the oil’s flavors and nutrients. We also learned about the health benefits of extra virgin olive oil, which is rich in antioxidants and healthy fats.

But getting to know Chef Gianluca and Holly was the best part of the evening. Holly followed up our visit with an email chock full of great photos, recipes, and tasting details.

The best restaurants in Capri
I did my research beforehand and found several highly recommended restaurants in Capri. If there’s one place I can recommend, that combines the perfect ambience with amazing food, it is Da Paolino. This place is truly famous as it’s set underneath an entire lemon tree grove – it is one of the most unique dining experiences in Italy.
I recommend that you book Da Paolino very early. You can use this link to book directly.
When is the best time to visit Capri?
Capri is a seasonal island so most of the businesses close for the winter months. The best time to visit Capri is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) when the weather is mild, the island is less crowded, and the natural beauty is at its peak. We visited in early May and it was a bit chilly. Spring brings lush greenery and blooming flowers, while the fall offers cooler temperatures and stunning sunsets. These seasons provide the ideal balance between pleasant weather for outdoor activities like hiking and boat tours and the chance to experience Capri without the summer crowds. July and August, while popular, can be very hot and busy, so visiting in the shoulder seasons ensures a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.
