Finest Punta Cana Review: Is This All-Inclusive Worth It?

I have strong opinions about all-inclusive resorts, and most of them involve what goes wrong: mediocre buffet food, watered-down drinks, rooms that look nothing like the photos, and a general feeling of being processed rather than hosted. I’ve written about the best all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean at length, so when I finally made it to the Dominican Republic and stayed at Finest Punta Cana, I went in with a calibrated skepticism and a fairly long checklist.

The short version: Finest Punta Cana is the real thing. It’s one of the most well-executed all-inclusive resorts I’ve stayed at anywhere in the Caribbean, and it’s a strong contender for the best family-friendly luxury all-inclusive in the Dominican Republic. That said, it’s not perfect, and it’s not right for everyone. Here’s the honest breakdown.

What Is Finest Punta Cana?

Finest Punta Cana is an all-inclusive resort by The Excellence Collection, located in Uvero Alto on the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, about 45 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport. It sits on a stretch of private beach and spans a large, well-maintained property with 455 all-suite rooms, 11 restaurants, 17 bars, seven pools, a spa, a kids club, and a fitness center.

What sets it apart from most all-inclusives is that it’s genuinely designed for both families and adults simultaneously, with dedicated zones for each. Families with children have full access to the property, the kids club, and family-specific suite categories. Adults who want a quieter, more elevated experience can book into the Excellence Club, an adults-only tier with private beach and pool access, upgraded amenities, and a separate check-in. Both sets of guests coexist on the same property without stepping on each other, which sounds simple but is actually quite hard to pull off.

I also wrote a longer feature on Finest Punta Cana for Islands.com — read that here if you want every detail.

The Suites: Genuinely Spacious, Not Just “Resort Spacious”

Every room at Finest Punta Cana is a suite, starting at 950 square feet and going up to 1,750 square feet. That distinction matters. This isn’t a resort using the word “suite” loosely — the rooms are actually large, thoughtfully designed, and well-stocked.

I stayed in a junior suite and had everything I could want: an ocean view, a jacuzzi on the terrace, champagne in the minibar when I arrived, a king bed with genuinely good linens, a lounge area, and 24-hour room service that I used more than once. The room felt like a place to actually spend time in, not just a place to sleep between pool sessions.

For families, the suite categories go further. Family suites have multiple sleeping areas and can include private swim-up pool access. If you’re traveling with kids and want space without the chaos of a standard hotel room, this is the configuration to book.

Who each suite tier is right for:

The junior suites are ideal for couples. The family suites are the right call for families with younger children who need space and want pool access without trekking across the property. The Excellence Club suites are for adults who want an extra layer of service, privacy, and calm — express check-in, fresh flowers in the room, private lounge access, and a reserved section of the beach.

One honest note: if you book a pool-facing suite, know that the main pool area can be loud during the day with children and music. If quiet is a priority, request a beach-facing room.

The Dining: Above Average for an All-Inclusive

All-inclusive food is where most resorts fail, and where Finest Punta Cana succeeds more than it has to. With 11 restaurants covering international cuisines — Mexican, Asian, Mediterranean, steakhouse, seafood, and more — there’s genuine variety, and the quality is consistent enough that you won’t be dreading meals.

The Market Kitchen serves as the main buffet and breakfast spot, and it’s good — actually good, not “good for a buffet” good. The specialty restaurants require reservations, which I’d recommend making on your first day. The a la carte options are where the kitchen does its best work, and you’ll want to rotate through them across your stay.

The Finest Club restaurant and lounge offers an elevated dining tier if you’re in that room category. For pure ambiance, a dinner at one of the beachfront dining options at sunset is worth the extra planning.

The drinks are included and are not watered down, which remains a more remarkable sentence than it should be at an all-inclusive.

The Pools and Beach

Seven pools means you can almost always find one that matches your mood. The main pool is large, lively, and designed for families — there’s entertainment, swim-up bar access, and energy throughout the day. The Excellence Club pool is quieter by design and reserved for adults staying in that tier. There are also smaller, more intimate pool areas scattered around the property.

The beach is private and genuinely beautiful — white sand, calm enough to wade in, and well-staffed with lounge chairs and regular drink service. The sea can have stronger surf depending on the time of year; November reportedly has calmer water than peak season months. Either way, the beach setup here is well above average.

The Finest Imagine Kids Club

If you’re traveling with children, the kids club is one of Finest Punta Cana’s strongest selling points. It’s large, age-segmented, and genuinely engaging — toddlers, younger kids, and pre-teens all have separate programming rather than being lumped together in one room. There’s a beachside pool complex adjacent to the club that younger guests love.

The practical upside for parents: the monitored play area is located near the restaurants, so you can have an actual meal while your children are supervised and happy. That combination is rarer than it should be.

The ONE Spa and Fitness

The spa is called The ONE Spa and offers a full menu of massages, facials, body treatments, and a hydrotherapy circuit that was one of the better decisions I made the entire trip. If you’re the kind of traveler who considers the spa a core part of the stay rather than an afterthought, budget time for it here.

The fitness center is well-equipped with professional-grade equipment. Pilates classes and other group fitness offerings are part of the programming. This isn’t a token gym — it’s a real one.

Is Finest Punta Cana Worth It?

Yes, for the right traveler. Here’s the quick breakdown:

Finest Punta Cana is an excellent choice if you are: a family with younger or school-age children who wants a luxury all-inclusive with genuine space and activities; a couple who wants a well-executed all-inclusive without the chaos of a party resort; someone doing the Dominican Republic for the first time and wanting a reliable, high-quality home base; anyone who prioritizes suite-level accommodations, consistent food, and a private beach.

It may not be your best choice if you are: traveling with teenagers who need more stimulation than a resort can provide; someone who prioritizes the most cutting-edge culinary experience above all else (the food is very good but not destination-dining level); a traveler looking for the lowest possible price point — this is a premium property priced accordingly.

My overall rating: 4.5 out of 5. One of the best all-inclusives I’ve stayed at in the Caribbean, and I plan to go back.

Getting to Punta Cana

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is well-served by direct flights from most major U.S. cities, including New York, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, and Chicago. Flight time from the East Coast is typically three to four hours, making Punta Cana one of the most accessible Caribbean destinations from the continental U.S. — which is a significant part of why it’s one of the most visited beach destinations in the region.

Getting from the airport to the resort: Finest Punta Cana is located in Uvero Alto, about 45 minutes from the airport. The resort offers its own airport shuttle, though it carries a fee (check current pricing when you book). Private transfers are also widely available and often more convenient for families or larger groups. If you’re planning to explore beyond the resort, renting a car gives you flexibility, though many guests find that between the resort amenities and booked excursions, they never need one.

Things to Do in Punta Cana Beyond the Resort

Even at a resort as well-equipped as Finest, there are excursions worth leaving for. Punta Cana has one of the most varied menus of day trips in the Caribbean, and the following are consistently the most popular and highest-rated.

Isla Saona Day Trip — This is the one most people book, and for good reason. Saona Island is a protected national park with some of the most impossibly blue water in the Caribbean, a natural pool where you can stand in the middle of the ocean, and a white sand beach that earns every photo you’ve seen of it. Full-day tours include a catamaran ride, lunch, and an open bar. Book a small-group tour if crowds bother you.

Dune Buggies and Cenote Swimming — Off-road buggy rides through the jungle that end at a freshwater cenote cave for swimming. Consistently one of the highest-rated excursions in the region, and genuinely fun. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting muddy.

Catamaran Snorkeling and Party Cruise — Sailing along the coast with snorkeling stops, rum cocktails, and a sunset return. The classic Caribbean afternoon, executed well here. There are family-friendly versions and adults-only options depending on your group.

Scape Park at Cap Cana — A full-day eco-adventure park with zip-lining, the famous Hoyo Azul blue lagoon, a cenote swim, and wildlife encounters. One of the best half-day or full-day options for families or anyone who wants more than a beach day.

Whale Watching — Available only January through March during humpback whale mating season off the coast of Samaná. If your trip falls in this window, it goes to the top of the list. It books up fast.

Cacao, Coffee, and Rum Cultural Tour — A visit to a local plantation covering cacao production (and chocolate tasting), coffee, and Dominican rum. A great option for foodies who want to go beyond the resort and connect with what’s actually grown and made here.

Best Time to Visit Punta Cana

Punta Cana’s tropical climate means it’s warm year-round, with temperatures staying roughly between 77°F and 88°F in any season. That said, the timing of your visit matters.

The dry season runs December through April and is the most popular window — sunny skies, low humidity, and calm seas. Book early if you’re planning a trip during these months, and expect peak pricing. January through March also brings humpback whale season if that’s on your list.

The wet season runs May through November. Afternoon rain showers are common, but mornings are typically sunny and the rest of the day often clears. Hotel rates drop meaningfully, and the crowds thin out. September and October are the most active months for Atlantic hurricanes, so those are the months I’d avoid. May, June, and November are excellent value windows with reasonable weather.

One specific note for Finest Punta Cana: the beach conditions at Uvero Alto are reportedly calmer in November than during spring peak season, which is worth factoring in if swimming in the ocean (rather than the pool) matters to you.

Frequently Asked Questions: Finest Punta Cana

Is Finest Punta Cana truly all-inclusive? Yes. All meals, drinks (including alcohol), entertainment, kids club, fitness center, and most on-property activities are included. Spa treatments, certain premium dining experiences, and the airport shuttle carry additional fees. Gratuities are included in the rate, though guests may tip additionally at their discretion.

What is the difference between the Finest Club and the Excellence Club at Finest Punta Cana? The Finest Club is a room upgrade tier offering larger suites, a private lounge, and access to a dedicated pool and beach section. The Excellence Club is adults-only and adds perks like express check-in, fresh flowers, premium room amenities, and a fully separate adults-only environment. Both are elevated tiers within the same property — the right choice depends on whether you’re traveling as a couple or family.

Is Finest Punta Cana good for families? Yes — it’s one of the best all-inclusive options in the Dominican Republic for families, particularly those with younger children. The Finest Imagine Kids Club is age-segmented, well-staffed, and genuinely engaging, and the family suites are spacious enough to actually be comfortable.

Is Finest Punta Cana good for couples or adults-only travelers? Yes. The Excellence Club tier creates a genuinely adults-only environment within the resort, with separate pool and beach access. Couples who aren’t interested in a family resort atmosphere should book into that tier.

How far is Finest Punta Cana from the airport? About 45 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). The resort is located in Uvero Alto, which is farther from the airport than the Bavaro area where many other resorts cluster, but most guests find the drive unremarkable and the quieter location worth it.

What is the best time of year to visit Finest Punta Cana? The dry season (December through April) offers the most reliable beach weather. November is a strong alternative for calmer ocean conditions, fewer crowds, and better pricing. Avoid September and October due to hurricane season risk.
