Looking for a North Florida winter getaway? While most people think of Florida as a destination for sunshine and beaches, winter is actually one of my favorite times to explore the northern part of the state.

I’ve lived in Northeast Florida for 25 years, and I can tell you that our winters are quite different from what you’ll find in Miami or the Florida Keys. You might enjoy a sunny afternoon in the 70s, but you can also wake up to temperatures in the 40s. If you’re looking for guaranteed beach weather, I’d head farther south. But if you love charming coastal towns, historic inns, romantic restaurants, luxury resorts, and long walks on uncrowded beaches, North Florida is a wonderful place to visit in December, January, or February.

Whether you’re planning a romantic winter weekend, a holiday getaway, or a few days away from the cold, these are five North Florida destinations I’d recommendโ€”and where I’d stay. For more detail, read my post on the best North Florida beaches.

1. St. Augustine: Best for Holiday Lights and Romantic Winter Weekends

If I could recommend only one North Florida destination for a winter getaway, it would be St. Augustine, which also happens to be my home. The nation’s oldest continuously occupied European-established city is beautiful throughout the year, but there’s something particularly special about the historic district in winter.

The weather is often comfortable for walking, the restaurants are inviting, and the narrow streets and historic buildings create a romantic atmosphere that’s hard to find elsewhere in Florida.

Why Visit St. Augustine in Winter?

The biggest draw is Nights of Lights, when millions of tiny white lights illuminate the historic downtown. For the 2026โ€“2027 season, Nights of Lights runs from November 21 through January 18. You can walk through the historic district, take a horse-drawn carriage ride, or book an evening boat cruise to see the lights from the water.

I’d recommend staying overnight rather than visiting just for the evening. The city has a completely different feel after many of the day-trippers leave, and you’ll have more time to enjoy the restaurants and atmosphere.

Outside the holiday season, January and February are excellent months for exploring Castillo de San Marcos, Flagler College, the Lightner Museum, and the city’s many shops and galleries.

And if you’re planning a romantic Valentine’s Day getaway, St. Augustine has no shortage of intimate restaurants and historic inns.

Where to Stay in St. Augustine in Winter

Casa Monica Resort & Spa is one of my favorite recommendations for visitors who want to stay in the heart of the historic district. Its location makes it easy to walk to restaurants, shops, and the Nights of Lights displays without worrying about downtown parking.

For a more romantic boutique experience,ย The Collector Luxury Inn & Gardensย is one of the most charming properties in town. Built from a collection of historic homes, the adults-focused property feels tucked away and intimate while still being steps from the heart of downtown. This is the type of place that works especially well for couplesโ€™ getaways and anniversary trips.

If you’re planning a romantic getaway, I’d also consider one of the historic bed-and-breakfast inns. Many offer charming rooms and a more intimate atmosphere than a large hotel.

For a holiday visit, I’d strongly recommend booking a Nights of Lights boat tour or guided evening experience in advance.

2. Amelia Island: Best for a Luxury Winter Beach Resort Getaway

Amelia Island is one of my favorite places to recommend for couples who want a relaxing winter getaway with a little luxury. Located near the Georgia border, the island combines beautiful Atlantic beaches, upscale resorts, and the charming historic town of Fernandina Beach.

Winter here is less about swimming and more about enjoying the coast at a slower pace. I love the idea of spending the morning walking along the beach, enjoying a leisurely lunch, and then heading into downtown Fernandina Beach for shopping and dinner. The historic district is filled with Victorian-era architecture, locally owned boutiques, and restaurants, making it especially appealing for a romantic weekend.

Why Visit Amelia Island in Winter?

Winter is a wonderful time for long beach walks, biking, exploring Fort Clinch State Park, and enjoying the island’s restaurants without the summer heat. If you’re planning a Valentine’s Day weekend, I’d look for a resort with a spa, ocean views, and good on-site dining. You can also spend an afternoon exploring Fernandina Beach, where Centre Street is lined with shops and restaurants.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Atlantic Ocean can be quite chilly during winter. I’d choose Amelia Island for the coastal atmosphere and resort experience rather than expecting to spend the entire weekend swimming.

Where to Stay on Amelia Island in Winter

Omni Amelia Island Resort & Spa is a strong choice for a winter resort getaway. With golf, dining, spa amenities, and oceanfront accommodations, there’s plenty to enjoy even if the weather isn’t warm enough for the beach.

For a special occasion or romantic weekend, I’d also compare The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, particularly if spa treatments and upscale dining are priorities.

If you prefer to walk to restaurants and shops, I’d consider a hotel or historic inn in downtown Fernandina Beach instead.

3. Ponte Vedra Beach: Best for Golf, Spas, and Winter Relaxation

Ponte Vedra Beach is one of Northeast Florida’s most upscale coastal communities, and winter is a wonderful time to enjoy its resorts, golf courses, and restaurants. If your idea of a perfect weekend involves a spa treatment, a round of golf, a long beach walk, and a great dinner, Ponte Vedra would be one of my first choices.

Unlike St. Augustine or Fernandina Beach, Ponte Vedra isn’t really a destination for wandering through a historic downtown. The experience here revolves around the resorts, golf, beach, and nearby restaurants.

Why Visit Ponte Vedra Beach in Winter?

North Florida’s cooler winter temperatures can be ideal for golf, particularly compared with the heat and humidity of summer. Ponte Vedra is home to TPC Sawgrass, famous for its island-green 17th hole and THE PLAYERS Championship.

But you don’t need to play golf to enjoy a weekend here. I’d consider Ponte Vedra for a spa-focused getaway, a romantic weekend, or simply a few days relaxing at an upscale oceanfront resort.

Winter beach walks are another highlight. Even when the water is too cold for swimming, the coastline is beautiful, and you’ll often find fewer people on the sand.

The Lodge & Club Ponte Vedra Beach is one of the area’s classic luxury resorts, with golf, spa facilities, restaurants, and oceanfront accommodations.

If golf is part of your plans, check tee-time availability and local event schedules before booking. Some winter weekends can be busy, particularly around major tournaments.

4. Atlantic Beach: Best for Winter Beach Walks and Great Restaurants

Atlantic Beach is one of my favorite Northeast Florida destinations for visitors who want a relaxed coastal atmosphere without spending their entire weekend at a resort. Located just north of Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach is home to Beaches Town Center, a walkable collection of restaurants, boutiques, coffee shops, and bars just steps from the ocean. It’s one of those places where you can park your car and enjoy most of the weekend on foot. And while summer brings plenty of beachgoers, winter offers a different experience.

Why Visit Atlantic Beach in Winter?

I particularly like Atlantic Beach for winter weekends when the weather is pleasant enough for a morning beach walk followed by a long lunch or afternoon browsing the shops. The restaurants around Beaches Town Center make this an appealing destination for couples who enjoy good food and don’t want to drive everywhere. It’s also a great choice if you’re looking for a low-key Valentine’s Day weekend without the sightseeing crowds of St. Augustine. You won’t find a long list of major attractions here, and that’s part of the appeal. Atlantic Beach is more about enjoying the coastal lifestyle.

Where to Stay in Atlantic Beach in Winter

Dune House Hotel & Spa, formerly One Ocean Resort & Spa, is the standout oceanfront hotel in Atlantic Beach. Its location at Beaches Town Center is especially convenient in winter, when you may want to spend more time dining and exploring than sitting on the beach.

For other options, look for accommodations within walking distance of Beaches Town Center so you can enjoy the restaurants and shops without driving.

5. Flagler Beach: Best for a Quiet Old Florida Winter Escape

If you’re looking for a peaceful North Florida winter getaway away from large resorts and busy tourist areas, I’d consider Flagler Beach. Located south of St. Augustine along scenic A1A, Flagler Beach has a distinctly Old Florida feel. You’ll find casual oceanfront restaurants, locally owned shops, beach cottages, and long stretches of sand. It’s not the kind of destination where you need to plan activities from morning until night. In fact, that’s exactly why I’d recommend it.

Why Visit Flagler Beach in Winter?

Winter is a lovely time to experience Flagler Beach at a slower pace. The beaches are often quieter, and cooler temperatures make long walks especially enjoyable.

I’d spend the morning walking along the ocean, stop for lunch at a casual beachfront restaurant, and perhaps explore nearby Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area.

If you’re looking for a romantic getaway without luxury resort prices or a busy downtown, Flagler Beach is worth considering. Just remember that winter temperatures can be unpredictable. Some afternoons may be warm enough to sit outside comfortably, while others call for a jacket.

Island Cottage Inn is an intimate boutique property I’d consider for a quiet romantic weekend. Its smaller scale is part of the appeal if you prefer inns to large resorts.

For a more casual Old Florida experience, I’d also look at Si Como No Inn, a colorful property near the beach.

Best Romantic North Florida Winter Getaways for Couples

Winter is one of my favorite times to recommend Northeast Florida for a romantic weekend, particularly around Valentine’s Day. If I were planning a couples’ getaway, here’s how I’d narrow the choices.

Luxury beachfront romanceAmelia IslandThe Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island
Spa and golf weekendPonte Vedra BeachPonte Vedra Inn & Club
Walkable restaurants and ocean viewsAtlantic BeachDune House Hotel & Spa

My first choice for a romantic winter weekend would be St. Augustine, particularly if you enjoy historic inns, restaurants, and walking around a charming downtown.

For a luxury resort experience, I’d choose Amelia Island or Ponte Vedra Beach.

Where to Go in North Florida in December, January, or February

The best winter destination also depends on when you’re visiting.

MonthWhere I’d GoWhy
DecemberSt. AugustineNights of Lights, holiday atmosphere, romantic downtown stays
JanuarySt. Augustine or Amelia IslandHoliday lights through mid-January, then quieter coastal escapes
FebruaryAmelia Island, Ponte Vedra Beach, or Atlantic BeachRomantic weekends, spa stays, and Valentine’s Day getaways

If you’re planning a December trip specifically to see holiday lights, I’d book St. Augustine accommodations well in advance. For January and February, I’d compare several weekend dates, particularly if your plans are flexible.

What Is North Florida Weather Like in Winter?

North Florida’s winter weather is one of the biggest reasons to choose your destination carefully. Unlike South Florida, where winter often feels warm and tropical, Northeast Florida experiences noticeable seasonal changes. December, January, and February can bring sunny afternoons in the 60s and 70s, but cold fronts can also produce chilly mornings and nights.

I wouldn’t plan a North Florida winter vacation around ocean swimming. Instead, I’d focus on historic sightseeing, restaurants, golf, spas, beach walks, and outdoor activities that don’t require getting into the water.

If a heated pool is important, confirm that your hotel offers one and that it’s available during your stay.

What I’d pack: Comfortable walking shoes, casual layers, a sweater or light jacket for evenings, and a warmer coat if the forecast calls for a cold front.

Frequently Asked Questions About North Florida Winter Getaways

Is North Florida worth visiting in winter?

Absolutely. North Florida is a great winter destination for historic towns, romantic inns, luxury resorts, restaurants, golf, and uncrowded beach walks. Just don’t expect the consistently warm swimming weather found farther south.

What is the best place to visit in North Florida in December?

St. Augustine is my top choice because of its Nights of Lights celebration, which illuminates the historic downtown throughout the holiday season. I’d recommend staying in the historic district so you can enjoy the lights and restaurants without driving.

Where should couples go for a romantic winter weekend in North Florida?

St. Augustine is excellent for historic charm and romantic restaurants. Amelia Island and Ponte Vedra Beach are ideal for luxury resort stays, while Atlantic Beach and Flagler Beach offer more relaxed coastal getaways.

Is St. Augustine crowded in December?

Yes, particularly during Nights of Lights weekends and the holiday period. If you’re visiting specifically for the lights, I’d consider staying downtown and booking restaurants and tours ahead of time.

Can you swim at North Florida beaches in January or February?

You can, but ocean temperatures are generally too chilly for comfortable swimming for many visitors. I’d choose a hotel with a heated pool if swimming is an important part of your vacation.

What is the warmest place in North Florida in winter?

Coastal Northeast Florida destinations such as St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra Beach, and Amelia Island generally have relatively mild winters, but none offers reliably tropical temperatures. For a consistently warmer beach vacation, consider South Florida or the Florida Keys.

How many days do you need for a North Florida winter getaway?

Two or three nights is ideal. St. Augustine and Amelia Island offer enough restaurants and attractions for a long weekend, while Ponte Vedra Beach, Atlantic Beach, and Flagler Beach are excellent choices for a more relaxed two-night escape.

My Recommendations After 25 Years in Northeast Florida

After living in Northeast Florida for 25 years, I think winter is one of the best times to experience this part of the state.

You won’t necessarily be lounging on the beach in a swimsuit, but you can enjoy beautiful coastal scenery, historic towns, great restaurants, and romantic places to stay without Florida’s summer heat and humidity.

If you’re planning a December getaway, I’d choose St. Augustine for Nights of Lights and its festive downtown atmosphere.

For a romantic January or February weekend, Amelia Island or Ponte Vedra Beach would be my top choices for luxury resorts and relaxation.

If you want a walkable beach town with excellent restaurants, choose Atlantic Beach.

And if your goal is simply to get away for a few days and enjoy a quieter pace, Flagler Beach is a lovely choice.

Whatever destination you choose, I’d book a hotel that offers the kind of experience you want even if the weather turns cool. That’s the secret to enjoying a North Florida winter getaway.
