The Ultimate Guide to Tourism for Dog and Cat Lovers: Sanctuaries & Shelters To Visit Around the World
If you’re a pet lover like me who can’t bear to leave your furry friends behind while traveling, you’re in luck. (My social media profile says, “Torn between traveling the world and staying at home on my couch with my dogs.). So I’ve often wondered how I can combine my love for travel and my love for animals. Around the world, there are incredible sanctuaries and shelters that welcome visitors to interact with, care for, and even adopt animals in need, from walking dogs on the beach in Hawaii to socializing puppies in the Caribbean.
I’m ridiculously passionate about helping homeless animals so I’m always on the hunt for how I can help local organizations. One of the hardest things was seeing all of the stray dogs – with puppies! – in the desert of Egypt with little access to food or water save for what the tourists offered. It was heartbreaking! I committed to go back there someday and rescue them all!
Hawaii has a high number of pet rescue programs and visitor-friendly animal experiences mainly because it’s an island state with limited space and high rates of stray or abandoned animals, which creates a strong need for shelters and foster programs. Plus, the tourism industry in Hawaii markets these programs – wish all destinations would do that!
Kaua’i Humane Society – Hawaii
On the beautiful island of Kaua’i, the Kaua’i Humane Society offers a unique opportunity for visitors to take shelter dogs on field trips. This program allows you to enjoy the natural beauty of the Garden Island while giving a shelter dog a break from the kennel. You can go on a hike, relax at the beach, or simply spend quality time with a dog in need. It’s a rewarding experience that benefits both you and the dog.
Potcake Place – Providenciales, Turks & Caicos
I first visited Potcake Place many years ago and it’s one of those places that has never left my mind. This non-profit dog rescue organization in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos is dedicated to rescuing and rehoming the local “Potcake” dogs. Visitors can participate in their “Take a Dog to the Beach” program, where you can walk a Potcake puppy along the stunning Grace Bay Beach. The organization provides all the necessary supplies, including a beach bag with essentials for walking a puppy. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy the beach while helping socialize a dog in need.

Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary – Costa Rica
I was in Costa Rica earlier this year and had hoped to make a visit to this sanctuary but time got away from me. Located in the Puntarenas province of Costa Rica, Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary is dedicated to rescuing, protecting, and rehabilitating the country’s precious fauna. The sanctuary is home to a variety of animals, including sloths, monkeys, and birds. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the animals and the conservation efforts in place to protect them. It’s an educational and heartwarming experience for animal enthusiasts.
Maui Humane Society – Hawaii
The Maui Humane Society offers a “Dog on Demand” program that allows visitors to take shelter dogs on adventures around the island. Whether it’s a hike, a trip to the beach, or a relaxing day at the park, this program provides dogs with much-needed socialization and exercise while giving visitors the chance to enjoy the company of a furry friend. It’s a win-win for both you and the dogs.
Hawaiian Humane Society – O’ahu
On the island of O’ahu, the Hawaiian Humane Society offers the ‘Īlio Explorers program, which allows visitors to take shelter dogs on enriching day trips. This program helps promote adult dog adoption and provides shelter dogs with an enriching and relaxing day out. It’s a great way to spend time with a dog while exploring the island.
Aloha Animal Sanctuary – O’ahu, Hawaii
Aloha Animal Sanctuary is O’ahu’s first non-profit sanctuary for farmed animals. The sanctuary provides a safe haven for animals like cows, pigs, and chickens who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected. Nestled in the vibrant city of La Paz, Ecuador, Refugio de Animales La Paz is a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming street dogs. Ecuador has a significant population of stray dogs, and this refuge works tirelessly to provide shelter, medical care, and socialization for animals in need. Tourists visiting the area can engage directly with the dogs by volunteering for daily activities such as feeding, walking, and playing with the animals. Many visitors also participate in socialization programs, helping shy or traumatized dogs gain confidence before adoption. Those interested in longer-term engagement can even foster dogs temporarily, giving travelers a hands-on way to support the refuge while experiencing Ecuadorian culture. Toronto Humane Society – Canada
In the heart of Canada, the Toronto Humane Society is one of the country’s largest and most respected animal welfare organizations. While it primarily serves local residents, the Society welcomes tourists interested in volunteering and learning about animal rescue in an urban setting. The Society also offers educational tours and workshops on responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, and the challenges of urban animal rescue. For travelers looking to adopt, the Toronto Humane Society has a streamlined adoption process that ensures pets are placed in loving, safe homes, including guidance for international adoption if applicable. Engaging with the Society provides a hands-on experience for animal lovers, making a tangible difference for rescued animals while exploring Toronto’s vibrant city life.
Bringing Dogs Back to the U.S. from Caribbean Shelters
If you’re considering adopting a dog from a Caribbean shelter, organizations like Caribbean Canine Connection and Potcake Place offer programs that facilitate the adoption and transport of dogs to the United States. These programs often involve volunteers who act as “travel buddies,” escorting the dogs to their new homes. The process typically includes health checks, vaccinations, and necessary paperwork to ensure a smooth transition for the dog. It’s a wonderful way to give a dog a second chance at life while making a positive impact.
I certainly wouldn’t be the first person to fall in love with a pet abroad and want to bring it back home. Heck, I rescued a cat from the streets of Naples, Italy and brought it to the U.S. That Italian Stallion lived to be 20 years old (good Italian genes).
Adopting a pet abroad and bringing it back to the United States can be an incredibly rewarding experience, but it requires careful planning and adherence to both U.S. and local regulations. First, research reputable shelters or rescue organizations in the country you are visiting, such as Potcake Place in Turks & Caicos or Caribbean Canine Connection in Barbados, and confirm that they offer international adoptions. Once you choose a pet, the organization will typically guide you through health requirements, including vaccinations (most importantly rabies), microchipping, and veterinary certifications. You’ll also need to complete import paperwork for the USDA or CDC, depending on the pet type and destination state. Many Caribbean rescues offer “travel buddy” programs where volunteers or adopters escort the pet on commercial or specialized pet flights, ensuring the animal’s comfort and safety throughout the journey. By following these steps, you can legally and safely adopt a pet abroad, giving a loving animal a new home in the U.S. while supporting international rescue efforts.

- Experienced Crew: Flights are operated by pilots experienced in handling pet travel.
Pricing: Costs vary based on distance, aircraft type, and whether the flight is private or shared. While specific prices are not publicly listed, shared charters can be more cost-effective, with some reports suggesting prices comparable to commercial flights for humans
