Where to Stay in Riviera Maya: Best Areas & Resorts

If you’re trying to decide where to stay in Riviera Maya, the answer really depends on the type of trip you want.

After traveling throughout Riviera Maya multiple times over the years, I’ve learned that each area has a completely different personality. Some destinations are built around luxury all-inclusive resorts and beautiful beaches, while others are better for boutique hotels, nightlife, wellness retreats, or snorkeling.

One of the biggest mistakes first-time visitors make is assuming Riviera Maya is one destination. It’s actually a long stretch of Mexico’s Caribbean coastline south of Cancun, with beach towns and resort communities that offer very different experiences.

I’ve stayed in several parts of Riviera Maya, from luxury all-inclusive resorts to beachfront boutique hotels and quieter wellness-focused areas. Some trips were family vacations, others were adults-only escapes, and I’ve found that choosing the right location can make an enormous difference.

My personal recommendation? Playa del Carmen is hard to beat for first-time visitors, Akumal is one of my favorites for a quieter beach vacation, and Maroma Beach is a wonderful choice for luxury and romance.

And if you’re looking for a newer luxury all-inclusive resort, I’ll also cover Costa Mujeres, just north of Cancun. It isn’t technically part of Riviera Maya, but it’s worth considering if you’re comparing resorts throughout the Mexican Caribbean.

Best Places to Stay in Riviera Maya by Travel Style

Sometimes it’s easier to choose a destination based on the kind of vacation you want rather than trying to compare every beach town. Here’s how I’d narrow it down.

Best for:

First-time visitors: Playa del Carmen. You’ll have restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and excursions within easy reach, especially if you stay near the center of town.
Families: Playacar or Akumal. Both offer a more relaxed setting with resort options that make family vacations easier.
Couples: Maroma Beach or Tulum. Choose Maroma for secluded luxury resorts or Tulum for boutique hotels, beach clubs, and wellness experiences.
Snorkeling: Akumal. Its protected bay is famous for sea turtles, although snorkeling access and conservation rules should be checked before visiting.
Food lovers: Playa del Carmen. I love having the freedom to leave my hotel and explore different restaurants rather than eating every meal at a resort.
Luxury all-inclusive resorts: Maroma Beach. Some of the region’s most appealing beachfront resorts are located here.
Newer luxury resorts near Cancun: Costa Mujeres. It’s a good alternative if you want an upscale, resort-focused vacation.

Playa del Carmen: Best for First-Time Visitors

Playa del Carmen is usually my recommendation for first-time visitors because it offers such a good mix of beaches, restaurants, nightlife, excursions, and resort options. It’s more energetic than some of Riviera Maya’s quieter resort areas, but I like that you can experience so much without spending your entire vacation inside a hotel. Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, is the heart of the action. You’ll find restaurants, shopping, cafés, and bars, and there’s plenty happening in the evenings.Playa del Carmen is also a convenient base for visiting Cozumel, exploring cenotes, or taking excursions to Mayan archaeological sites.

Choose Playa del Carmen if: You want variety, walkable restaurants, nightlife, and easy access to activities.
Consider somewhere else if: You’re dreaming of a secluded resort where you rarely encounter crowds.

Best Hotels in Playa del Carmen

Hyatt Vivid Playa del Carmen

Best for: Adults who want an all-inclusive experience close to the action.
This is an option to consider if you want the convenience of an adults-only all-inclusive resort while still being close to Playa del Carmen’s restaurants and nightlife. It’s a different experience from the more secluded resorts farther down the coast.
Why choose it: A convenient location for travelers who want resort amenities without feeling completely removed from town.

Mahekal Beach Resort

Best for: Travelers who prefer a relaxed beachfront resort with character.
Mahekal offers a different atmosphere from the larger all-inclusive properties. Its tropical setting and bungalow-style accommodations give it a more intimate, barefoot-luxury feel. I’d consider this property if you want to spend time at the beach but also enjoy exploring Playa del Carmen’s restaurants and shops.
Why choose it: A more relaxed beachfront setting with easy access to town.

Tulum: Best for Boutique Hotels and Wellness

Tulum has changed dramatically over the years, but it’s still one of the most visually beautiful places in Riviera Maya. This is where I’d look for boutique hotels, wellness retreats, yoga, spa experiences, and stylish beach clubs. Tulum has a very different personality from Playa del Carmen. Instead of large resorts and busy shopping streets, you’ll find jungle-inspired hotels, beachfront restaurants, and a more design-focused atmosphere. But there are tradeoffs.

Tulum can be expensive, especially in the beachfront hotel zone. Getting around isn’t always convenient, and traffic can be frustrating during busy periods. It’s also important to understand the difference between staying in Tulum town and staying along the beach. A hotel in town may offer better value, but you won’t necessarily be able to walk to the ocean.

Choose Tulum if: You want a boutique hotel, wellness experiences, and a stylish beach vacation.
Consider somewhere else if: You want an easy, affordable, all-inclusive vacation with everything close together.

Akumal: Best for Snorkeling and Relaxation

Akumal is one of my favorite places in Riviera Maya when I want a quieter beach vacation. It feels much more relaxed than Playa del Carmen or Cancun, and its beautiful Caribbean setting is especially appealing to travelers who love snorkeling and spending time in the water. Akumal is famous for its sea turtles, and the bay is one of the area’s best-known snorkeling destinations. Because the marine environment is protected, visitors should follow local rules and use authorized operators where required. I also like Akumal’s location between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It offers a quieter home base while still putting other attractions within reach.

Choose Akumal if: You want snorkeling, beautiful beaches, and a more relaxed vacation.
Consider somewhere else if: You want nightlife, shopping, and a large selection of restaurants within walking distance.

Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya

Best for: Couples seeking an adults-only luxury all-inclusive resort.
Secrets Akumal is an excellent option for travelers who want the convenience of an all-inclusive resort without giving up the relaxed atmosphere that makes Akumal special. Its beachfront location is a major attraction, particularly for visitors interested in enjoying the area’s beautiful Caribbean setting and snorkeling opportunities.

I especially like Puerto Morelos for travelers who want a quieter vacation without feeling completely isolated. There are also larger all-inclusive resorts outside the town itself, so the experience can vary depending on exactly where you stay.

Choose Puerto Morelos if: You prefer a laid-back atmosphere, smaller-town character, and easy access to the beach.

If you’re dreaming of a luxury beach vacation, Maroma Beach is one of the first areas I’d consider. This stretch of coastline is known for its beautiful sand, turquoise water, and upscale resorts. Unlike Playa del Carmen, Maroma Beach isn’t somewhere I’d stay for nightlife or walkable restaurants. The appeal is the setting itself. Many travelers choose this area specifically because they want to spend most of their vacation enjoying their hotel, the beach, and the resort amenities.

Costa Mujeres isn’t technically part of Riviera Maya. It’s north of Cancun, but I think it’s worth including because travelers comparing luxury resorts in the Mexican Caribbean frequently consider both destinations. This area has become known for modern all-inclusive resorts and a more relaxed, resort-focused atmosphere than Cancun’s busy Hotel Zone.

If your priority is a beautiful resort where you can spend most of your vacation, Costa Mujeres is worth a look. But if you want to explore Playa del Carmen, Tulum, cenotes, and other Riviera Maya attractions regularly, staying farther south will usually be more convenient.

Choose Costa Mujeres if: You want a modern luxury resort and don’t mind being farther from Riviera Maya’s main attractions.

Riviera Maya vs. Cancun: Which Is Better?

This is one of the most common questions travelers ask when planning a vacation to Mexico’s Caribbean coast. And while both are wonderful destinations, I think they offer very different experiences. Cancun is often the easier choice if you want a large resort, a lively Hotel Zone, nightlife, and convenient access to the airport. Riviera Maya offers more variety. You can stay in a busy beach town, a secluded luxury resort, a wellness-focused boutique hotel, or a quiet snorkeling destination. Personally, I prefer Riviera Maya because I love having so many different experiences available. And the food is amazing!

If you’re someone who wants to leave your hotel and explore, I think Riviera Maya offers a lot of opportunities to do that. But if your idea of the perfect vacation is spending a week at a beautiful all-inclusive resort, either destination can work. The most important thing is choosing the right area and hotel for your travel style.

My Thoughts on Where to Stay in Riviera Maya

After traveling throughout Riviera Maya many times, I’ve found that there really isn’t one best place to stay. It all depends on the kind of vacation you’re hoping to have. For first-time visitors, I still think Playa del Carmen offers one of the best combinations of restaurants, activities, and convenience.

For a quieter beach vacation, Akumal is one of my personal favorites. There’s something special about its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful Caribbean setting. If you’re planning a romantic getaway or luxury vacation, I’d look closely at Maroma Beach. And if boutique hotels, wellness experiences, and trendy beach clubs are more your style, Tulum is probably a better fit. For families, Playacar offers the convenience of resort accommodations while keeping Playa del Carmen within easy reach. And if you’re considering luxury all-inclusive resorts throughout the wider Mexican Caribbean, Costa Mujeres is another destination worth comparing.

My biggest piece of advice is to decide what matters most to you before choosing your hotel. Do you want to explore restaurants and local attractions? Spend every day at the beach? Enjoy a luxury all-inclusive experience? Or find somewhere quiet where you can truly unwind? Once you answer that question, deciding where to stay in Riviera Maya becomes a whole lot easier.
