If youโre trying to decide where to stay in Riviera Maya, the answer really depends on the type of trip you want. After traveling throughout Riviera Maya multiple times over the years, Iโve learned that each area has a completely different personality. Some destinations are built around luxury all-inclusive resorts and calm beaches while others are more focused on boutique hotels, nightlife, wellness, or snorkeling.
One of the biggest mistakes first-time visitors make is assuming Riviera Maya is one destination. Itโs actually a long stretch of Caribbean coastline south of Cancun with very different beach towns and resort areas spread throughout it.
Iโve stayed in several parts of Riviera Maya over the years, including luxury all-inclusive resorts, beachfront boutique hotels, and quieter wellness-focused areas. Some trips were family vacations, others were adults-only escapes, and each area felt completely different depending on the vibe we wanted.
This guide breaks down the best places to stay in Riviera Maya, who each area is best for, and the hotels Iโd personally recommend depending on your travel style.
Quick Picks: Best Areas to Stay in Riviera Maya
- Playa del Carmen: Best for first-time visitors, nightlife, restaurants, and walkability
- Tulum: Best for boutique hotels, wellness, and trendy beach clubs
- Akumal: Best for snorkeling, sea turtles, and a quieter beach vacation
- Puerto Morelos: Best for laid-back travelers and smaller resorts
- Costa Mujeres: Best for newer luxury all-inclusive resorts and calmer beaches
- Playacar: Best for families and upscale gated resorts
- Maroma Beach: Best for luxury beach resorts and romantic getaways
Playa del Carmen: Best for First-Time Visitors
Playa del Carmen is usually my recommendation for first-time visitors because it offers the best mix of beaches, restaurants, nightlife, excursions, and resort options. Itโs more energetic than some of the quieter resort areas, but still feels manageable and easy to explore.
If you like the idea of walking to restaurants, shopping, beach clubs, and cafes instead of staying entirely inside a resort, Playa del Carmen is a great choice. Quinta Avenida gives the area a lively atmosphere, especially in the evenings.
This is also one of the best places to stay if you plan to take day trips to Cozumel, cenotes, or Mayan ruins.

Tulum: Best for Boutique Hotels and Wellness
Tulum has changed dramatically over the years, but itโs still one of the most visually beautiful places in Riviera Maya. Itโs ideal for travelers looking for boutique hotels, yoga retreats, wellness experiences, and stylish beach clubs.
The beaches here are stunning, but Tulum is more expensive and less convenient than Playa del Carmen. Traffic can also be frustrating during busy periods.
That said, if your ideal vacation includes smoothie bowls, spa treatments, jungle hotels, and slow mornings near the beach, Tulum delivers a completely different experience than the larger all-inclusive resort areas.

Akumal is one of my favorite areas in Riviera Maya when I want a quieter beach vacation. It feels far more relaxed than Playa del Carmen or Cancun and is known for its calm turquoise water and sea turtle snorkeling.
This is a great option for families, couples, and travelers who want a slower pace without sacrificing beautiful beaches.
Akumal also works well as a middle ground location between Tulum and Playa del Carmen.

Riviera Maya vs Cancun: Which Is Better?
This is one of the most common questions travelers ask. Cancun is generally better for nightlife, larger resorts, and convenience close to the airport. Riviera Maya tends to feel more scenic, relaxed, and varied depending on the area you choose. Personally, I prefer Riviera Maya because it offers more personality and more diverse experiences beyond the typical resort vacation. And the food is amazing!

My Thoughts on Where to Stay in Riviera Maya
After traveling throughout Riviera Maya many times, Iโve found there really isnโt one โbestโ place to stay. The right area depends entirely on the type of vacation you want.
If you want nightlife and restaurants, Playa del Carmen is hard to beat. If youโre dreaming of wellness retreats and boutique hotels, Tulum makes more sense. For quieter beaches and snorkeling, Akumal is one of my personal favorites. And if luxury all-inclusive resorts are the priority, Costa Mujeres and Maroma Beach have some of the best properties in the region.
The good news is that Riviera Maya offers enough variety that you can easily tailor the trip to your travel style, whether youโre planning a romantic getaway, family vacation, foodie trip, or luxury beach escape.
